Firm Cited For Breakthrough HIV/AIDS Testing Unit

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., May, 2005 – Beckman PointCare Technologies, Inc., developer of the world’s first portable hematology instrument for managing antiretroviral therapy in HIV/AIDS patients, has received the 2005 New England Innovation Award for its revolutionary FlowCare™ monitoring system from the Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE).

“We’re delighted to have been honored by the leading business group in our region,” said Petra Krauledat, president and chief executive officer of PointCare Technologies, Inc. “This award recognizes the hard work done over many years by our dedicated staff to bring lifesaving diagnostic capabilities to areas in the world not well served by medical technologies used in highly developed countries.”

PointCare and seven other winning companies were selected by a panel of judges from a record 150 nominees, based on four criteria: the specific nature of the nominee’s innovation; the social and/or industry impact of the innovation; the company’s rate of growth; and its financial stability.

The FDA-cleared FlowCare™ monitoring system, small enough for use at the point of care for monitoring HIV drug therapy, enables simple and affordable CD4 monitoring and is ideally suited for use in remote locations, such as those found in sub-Saharan Africa, where the spread of HIV/AIDS infection has been devastating.

The FlowCare system is small, rugged, uses closed tubes for sample and reagents, and is easy to operate, with virtually no setup time and minimal operator training. Introduced last year at the Global AIDS 2004 conference in Bangkok, Thailand, the FlowCare system is distributed and supported by Beckman Coulter, Inc. and is initially being marketed in Africa, the Caribbean and other developing markets where monitoring needs are high.
